Tell Her She’s Beautiful

So today you turn 18.

The world is finally at your fingertips but you’ve cheated it for so long.

Is it everything you thought it would be?

I still don’t believe I’m not there with you. I thought I’d be there, by your side. Worrying about you, but still having you. But now I’m not there.

Thinking back to last year. Time as flown by so quick and we are completely different people.

Yet one thing remains. The one thing I always wanted to let you know, encapsulated in a song.

I heard it the day before your 17th Birthday and I figured out the chords so I could play it for you at your party.

I was so excited I just wanted to sing it to you. It was so perfect. But I got really emotional over it so I asked my dad to play guitar. So it could sound its best for you.

But I got to your party and everyone was drunk. sleazy girls threw themselves on boys and some even threw themselves on girls. People were yelling and screaming, bickering and fighting. I just watched with two other guys who also abstained. The song played through my head all night.

But as time passed we got kicked out into your tiny backyard. I got half a dozen different drinks spilt on me and who knows what smoke it was permeating the threads in my scarf. I decided tonight was not the night. I could sing her the song another time. Next year. Yeah her 18th sounded like a better time. People celebrate then. I mean it was only her 17th.

Do you have those feelings of regret? When in retrospect you wish you had have done it. Gotten over yourself and just done it. How was I to know there would be no next year?  That she wouldn’t care for me anymore. That we wouldn’t even be friends.  It hurts but either way my song remains the same. You should listen to it. It might remind you of someone you care for so deeply.

Just don’t let your opportunity pass by.

Sarah McLennan said this of her song:

“Written about a friend of mine. Sometimes you just cant find the right words to let someone know how valuable they are. Sometimes they can forget, or be told otherwise, or never have been told before just how incredibly beautiful they are…just as they are. Dont let someone go through life not knowing their worth. …this is for them, and this is for you.”

Beautiful by Sarah McLennan.
